Welcome to Eastern Michigan University! |
Welcome to EMU! This walking tour will showcase some of the oldest buildings on the Eastern Michigan campus, founded as the Michigan State Normal School in 1849. The school has had a profound influence on the city of Ypsilanti itself, allowing economic and other gains that come with having a student population of up to 25,000. Today the University offers five colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business, Health & Human Services, Technology, and Education, which is rated as one of the best Education schools in the nation. When the Normal School was founded, it was the first Normal School (or, school for teaching of educators) west of the Allegheny Mountains. | |
Most of the buildings on the tour are included in Eastern Michigan University's own historic district. They are open on weekdays so that you may see the interior, keeping in mind that classes may be going on and most of the interiors have lost some of their historic integrity. This tour highlights seven historic buildings still important to this thriving campus. Feel free to explore the rest of the campus, visit the library, or eat in the Student Union while here.
(If time or inclination allow, drive or walk down Summit and Normal streets just south of campus to view many more historical and interesting homes.)
